I've often notice a particular type of geometric linear designs on plaster work and carved wood when visiting some of our beautiful stately homes in the UK. After doing a bit of research I found out that this particular design style is called strapwork. Strapwork is basically a border of ribbon like lines that create geometric shapes, scrolls and interwoven patterns. This style of pattern probably originates from arabesque work. It became popular in England during the sixteenth and seventeenth century's. It's often found in Elizabethan and Jacobean buildings.
For this design I've incorporated simple deep blue strapwork shapes with a central vertical row of diamonds in alternating sizes and alternating colours of cream and coral. I've added cream and coral circles, semi-circles and ovals and split the design into four segments, each with alternating background colours of blue and green. I've used three textured stitch patterns, diamond stitch, zigzag stitch and brick stitch.
